Who we are

The Outlier is an independent publication at theoutlier.ink, written and edited by Hristo Ivanov, based in Sofia, Bulgaria. For the purposes of data protection law, Hristo Ivanov is the data controller for this website.

What data we collect and why

1. Newsletter subscriptions If you subscribe to The Outlier newsletter, we collect your email address. We use this solely to send you new articles and occasional updates from The Outlier. We do not sell, share, or rent your email address to any third party. Your subscription is managed through Ghost, whose privacy policy is available at ghost.org/privacy.

2. Support and payments If you become a paid supporter, your payment is processed by Stripe. We do not store your card details. Stripe's privacy policy is available at stripe.com/privacy. We retain your email address and subscription status to manage your account.

3. Analytics We use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use the site - which articles are read, how long people stay, and where traffic comes from. This data is anonymised and aggregated. We do not use it to identify individuals. You can opt out of Google Analytics tracking at any time by using a browser extension such as the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

4. Contact If you email us, we retain your email and the content of your message in order to respond to you. We do not add you to any mailing list without your explicit consent.

5. Pitch submissions If you submit a pitch via the Submission Desk form, we collect your name, email address, and the content of your pitch. We use this solely to evaluate and respond to your pitch. We do not share this information with third parties.


Your rights under GDPR

As a resident of the European Union or European Economic Area, you have the following rights regarding your personal data:

  • The right to access - you may request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • The right to rectification - you may request that we correct inaccurate data.
  • The right to erasure - you may request that we delete your personal data. For newsletter subscribers, you can do this at any time by clicking "Unsubscribe" in any email.
  • The right to restrict processing - you may request that we limit how we use your data.
  • The right to data portability - you may request a copy of your data in a portable format.
  • The right to object - you may object to our processing of your data where we rely on legitimate interests.

To exercise any of these rights, write to hristo@theoutlier.ink. We will respond within 30 days.

If you believe we have not handled your data appropriately, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the Commission for Personal Data Protection (CPDP) in Bulgaria at cpdp.bg, or with the supervisory authority in your country of residence.


Data retention

We retain subscriber email addresses for as long as you remain subscribed. We retain pitch submission data for 12 months after the pitch is resolved. Analytics data is retained in accordance with Google Analytics' standard retention settings (26 months by default).

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be noted at the top of this page with a revised date. Continued use of the site after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
