Have something to say? Pitch it.
The Outlier publishes guest work. If you have a sharp argument, an unusual angle, an important message or a piece of research worth sharing - pitch it. The expectations are high, but the door is open!
What are we looking for?
Main topics we cover: Statistics, Fashion, Food, Books, Essays, Cinema, Music, Random - and anything else in between you might want to write about.
The common thread is a point of view - we are not looking for summaries or overviews. We want writing that argues something, notices something, or explains something that you could not find anywhere else. Ideally, in the future we will have a few main writers that will contribute to the publication altogether - why not become one of them?
Good pitches have one of three qualities:
Pieces should be between 500 and 3,000 words. Listicles and press releases are not welcome, and will be ignored.
Not a full draft - just the pitch. Two or three paragraphs: what is the piece about, why it matters, why are you the right person to write it? Use the form below.
Every pitch gets a response - yes, no, or "interesting but here is what is missing"; we do not ghost pitches.
Once commissioned, you write the full draft. We are available for questions and structural feedback throughout.
Fact-checking, line editing, feedback rounds until both parties are satisfied.
Your piece goes live with your full byline, author bio, and a link to wherever you want readers to find you. Shared across The Outlier's channels and newsletter; you own your work, we only make it accessible!
